Meeting with Dean Gomez
Caption by William, 12th Grade. In my photography class with Critical Exposure, we zeroed in on an issue that we all cared about, which was the budget for LAYC’s Upward Bound program. We all agreed that the summer component [during which time students stay in GWU's dorms] was a fun part of the program but also one of the more expensive ones. So we came up with solutions to try to cut back on the cost that we spend on the dorms. We made a proposal to one of the deans of GW to possibly get the dorm costs donated, so that we could have that $15,000 redistributed back into our budget. We worked hard. We had pictures that students took and we had a picture of GW’s website with some of the facts. I myself gave a short story about my experience in the program and we had three other students give longer stories about their experience. It was a great success. Dean Gomez committed to helping us raise money to not just cover the dorms for next year, but to cover the entire program if the federal funds run out. I think from the photos, showing the students actually at GW, enjoying the UB program, made it convincing for Dean Gomez that, yes, these students really do benefit and prosper from the program. I think that’s what made him agree to, 'I will help you all out.'
