A Vision So Clear with a Sound So Faint

I put a photo of my brother on the keys of an open piano, and I took the picture. To me it represents what my brother stood for in a way that words can’t. My brother graduated, and it also captures the music side of him that is also in me. I took this photo while I was at school in the auditorium. He graduated from Spingarn STAY, the same program I’m in. He graduated in 2006 before he got killed. I’m going back to school because of my brother, actually. He got shot and before he got shot I made a promise to him that I was going to graduate from high school so I enrolled in the same program . But, later on that year, he got killed. So I dropped out, I lost my focus, I couldn’t really concentrate. And now, I’m just getting back in here because I know he wanted me to finish school, and I made him a promise that I would finish school and walk across that same stage that he walked across. And I’m going to make sure that I fulfill my promise--my word is my bond.

Drowning in My Own Pain

I took this picture in my bedroom at home. I took all of my liquor bottles and lined them up in my windowsill in a half moon type shape. To me it represents my pain and what I used to get rid of my pain, which is usually liquor. It’s various options that I feel like I have for relinquishing my pain, for getting rid of the thoughts that I have in my mind that I can’t take at that time. Most of the drinking happened after my brother got killed. As you can see there’s writing on a couple of the bottles--I tagged it on the day of my brother’s death. After my brother got killed I started drinking really heavy and these bottles represent basically the amount of liquor that I drank through the week that my brother got killed to help keep my mind off of it because I was so disturbed. I wrote [on the bottles] that I miss my brother, I wrote his birthday and his death date, I wrote a couple of quotes--just things to help me better remember him without him being here.

If Eyes Had Voices

When I look at this picture I see a window, it's like a brighter outtake on life, it's like a way to see what's not plain to see. It captures my eyes and the emotion that's behind it. I feel like through this picture you can open up my brain and pick out what I'm thinking. I was trying to capture the emotion in my eyes and in my face to tell a story that I'm hurt and I've been hurt but there's always a brighter outlook on life.

College Tour

Upward Bound takes 60 students from throughout the city and brings them together for a 4-year experience. They take college classes and have assistance going to college because not many students have that chance, or have assistance in general.
