Yes I skate

“This photo is of me doing a 360(treflip) flip on a skateboard. I took this on the groups second photo gallery where I take pictures outside. I took this because I love skating and nowadays there aren’t a lot of black skaters from S.E. D.C. This Photo represents my passion and dedication to keep skating even though people tell me it’s not my sport.”

Negating the Predetermined Standards of Society

“Displayed in this picture are my Mother and father at work; my mother is the main focus and my father is blurred in the background. My mother is wearing her work shirt for the franchise that she owns, my gym, Childrens Fitness Center. My mother is currently working on opening her second location for the franchise, while my father is looking for work. My father has been doing work on the house and taking care of us children since he’s at home a lot. This is the exact opposite of the roles that women have had predetermined for them in the past. My mother is working while my father is at home. I am proud of both of them for not living up to the standards that society has determined for them.”

“This photos represents the excess amount of alcohol and it’s availability in stores. The issue in this photo is the lack of restrictions made by the government to prohibit the amount of alcohol related accidents, killings and careless mistakes. The constant advertisement of alcohol beverages tempts not only the adults, but students to become addicted not only to alcohol but the idea and mindset of alcohol abuse. Stationing liquor stores in neighborhoods in  wrong because it raises students at a young age to incorporate alcohol into their lives.”

Bud Beneath it All

“I found a cigarette bud while on my way to the bus stop. I took this picture because people don’t seem to understand the facts of smoking. Besides the fact that it leaves and odor and makes harms your teeth, it can be deadly. One would think it could make someone stop, but it doesn’t.”

Underestimation

“At my school I constantly see students being put down by teachers, the people who are supposed to be motivating them. Teachers see where you come from and what previous knowledge you have, and make quick judgement about your abilities.That is why I took this picture, to show people that, this is what they are doing; throwing DCPS youths’ reputation in the trash and denying us the opportunity to perform and thrive. If teachers gave students the individual attention and encouragement they need, our youth could be doing so much more. We would finally be taken as serious as we should be.”

Empathy

“This picture represents that there is good and bad in everybody. The word riot was hidden in the word Marriot, which shows that we all have a little fire inside of us. To the outside world people are perceived as good people but you don’t know that until you to know them, and vice versa. Someone, who you may perceive as bad, also has good in them.”

How High Should the Sky Be?

“ This was taken inside of a school building and through a window to show how expectations of students have highly increased. Students spend hours after school to complete assignments and ask teachers to help in order to do their best and excel. This competitiveness is good for improvement, but also overwhelms students, causing stress. It is very hard for students to reach these high expectations, even with their best efforts, so how high should the sky be for students to reach in reality?”

Lacking Resources

“This picture was taken at St. Albans School (STA)  in Washington, DC. STA is an independent college preparatory day and boarding school for boys in grades 4-12. The students have the privilege to take classes in a high tech facility, where they are taught  by teachers , who are experts in theirs fields. As a DCPS student, I would like to address the issue with limited resources. The DCPS community lacks the materials needed to fully educate the students to learn the knowledge necessary for college. With the help of the community, we can fight for the resources needed, and give DCPS students the chance for a better education.”

Small Tree of Life

“I took this picture outside of Critical Exposure. I took it because it looks like it has had such a small life as a tree. I love how the sun rays show on the top of the tree like it’s giving the tree life and power to grow. The bars behind the little tree are protecting the tree from danger, keeping it safe from harms way. I took this photo from a slanted angle so that the sunlight appears in the picture. It’s an interesting tree.”

No Limits

“I took this picture to represent limits. Many people limit themselves today because of what society say about who they should be. The “ stop” in this picture means never stop being who you are. STOP limiting yourself! You are free to be who you want to be; don’t let anyone else choose who you will be in your future. It’s your life, live it how you want.”
