“Communities are like a garden. They are filled with variety and require certain things to thrive. A garden needs a gardener, sunlight, and water. A community needs leaders, unity, and resilience.”
Brizel M.C. | 11th Grade Youth Organizing Collective, 2023-2024
“My name is Brizel M.C. and I am a high school student, an author, and a future lawyer. I believe in the importance of family which does not require blood but requires love. I also believe in the importance of building and strengthening communities which requires trust, honesty, patience, and resilience. In my community, I am one of many leaders. I mostly express the change I want to see in the world through writing, and when I am confident, I do it verbally. For instance, as the co-author of the bilingual children’s book Belinda Lifts Her Voice/Belinda Eleva Su Voz, I am able to promote diversity in literature. I am also able to encourage youth to advocate for change regardless of their age and to honor their loved ones daily. Overall, everyone is a leader and there are many ways to advocate for the change you want to see in your community, whether you do it verbally, or written.”
