Members of the Youth Organizing Collective (YOC) visited the Museum of the Palestinian People on 18th Street.
“The Museum of the Palestinian People is the first museum in Washington D.C. devoted to preserving and celebrating Palestinian history, arts, and culture. For decades, the story of the Palestinian people has been told by others; until now. The Museum of the Palestinian People is here to tell our stories; stories that encompass the rich history, vibrant arts, and culture, of a people who thrive even in the face of adversity.” — MPP Website
Like much of the world this past fall, YOC members engaged with the history of Palestine and the ongoing conflict. Through our discussions, members explored the interconnectedness of imperialism, capitalism, white supremacy, and media narratives, drawing parallels to the transnational struggle for liberation. We explored the significance of different organizing tactics in the fight for justice. The visit was an opportunity to deepen this understanding. One of our members, Jay, shared their thoughts on the experience:
“Going to the museum, I knew that I would learn something new, but I didn’t expect to learn so much. Not just about the current genocide of their people, but about Palestine’s rich and extensive cultural history and background. Our guide was so descriptive and explanatory, and it was clear he knew what he was talking about. The art and pictures were so beautiful to look at, and I got to learn so many stories about so many prominent Palestinian artists. I took tons of pictures that day as well. I really enjoyed the experience and hope to go back once they add more exhibits.”
Jay’s reflections capture the essence of our visit. The museum not only educated us about the struggles faced by Palestinian people today but also illuminated the vibrant arts and culture that form a crucial part of their identity. We left inspired to share what we learned and to continue exploring the intersections of culture, history, and activism. We encourage everyone to visit the museum and experience its powerful exhibits for themselves.
