This is a photo of me drawing. I have been drawing since I was seven years old. I draw to imagine and be creative. Art helps me to tell my stories. Sometimes I can't put words on it, and in my pictures, there are no words. I don't need any words when I draw, there is no message with words that I can send, just a feeling. People who don't have access to arts feel sad. In Sierra Leone, I know some kids who want to do art but they don't have the pencil or the paper. When I was back home in 2006, I showed my drawings to my sisters and they didn't know I could draw. They made me feel like I could do it. If they had all that supplies, they could do it too, they have the talent but they don't have the supplies. I think they feel sad and mad and it puts them down. It makes them feel like they aren't valued because they can't do stuff like that. Like my sisters, a lot of people at YouthBuild don't have access to arts. Some of the kids in YouthBuild ask me if I'm going to teach them how to draw. I think they want to learn to draw because they see me drawing pictures, they wish they could do it too. A lot of people have passion for it but they don't know how. They see me and say, I want to do that, I want to use art to tell stories. YouthBuild doesn't have art classes, they don't have the teachers, maybe if we had an art teacher we could have more art because the teacher could be the one to help us find our creative side. i think that's the problem in YouthBuild. I think art would help kids release their stress. Some kids come in the morning and don't want to even talk to you, maybe they could use art to speak for them. We need art at YouthBuild for the students so that they can learn to send messages and tell their stories.
