During June of 2011 Critical Exposure held its sixth annual spring exhibit of student work - BOTH SIDES OF THE LENS: The Faces and Stories of D.C. Youth.  The exhibit was on display at the PEPCO Edison Place Gallery in Washington, D.C., where more than 250 people joined us to look at students' photos, listen to their stories, and support their efforts to create change.  Two students spoke out about the power of photography to empower youth, to hold policymakers accountable, and to create change in schools and communities.

On the opening night alone, more than 60 people wrote photo-postcards to the Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools to support Washington Metropolitan High School's campaign to get a library at their school.

The winners of Through Your Lens, a national photography and writing contest on school facilities, were on display during the week of May 9 – 13 in the Russell Senate Rotunda on Capitol Hill.  This exhibit was the result of a one-month contest that received more than 300 submissions from students, teachers, and parents across the country who wanted to spotlight the important role school facilities play in a child's education.

The contest was a partnership between Critical Exposure, the Healthy Schools Campaign and 21st Century School Fund.  There were examples of truly high-quality learning environments, as well as buildings that no child should have to learn in.  The 26-photo exhibit can also be viewed online, and contestants were urged to invite their legislators to view the exhibit.

An article about the exhibit and contest appeared in The Huffington Post.
