Editor's Note: Critical Exposure has run a number of projects focused on the issue of teen pregnancy. In 2007, members of the Alexandria Youth Council (AYC), in conjunction with the Alexandria City Public Schools and the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy, worked together with Critical Exposure to increase awareness about the issue of teen pregnancy. Equipped with digital cameras and audio recorders, AYC members interviewed and photographed teen parents and their children. The students presented their photographs to the Alexandria City Council and exhibited their work at Alexandria City Hall. The exhibit’s opening reception was attended by the Mayor, Deputy Superintendent, City Manager, and members of the City Council.

In 2007, Critical Exposure partnered with the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA) to bring attention to youth homelessness in D.C. Critical Exposure and DCAYA trained several formerly homeless youth in the Sasha Bruce Independent Living Program to use photography to illustrate aspects of living on the streets. The youths’ photographs were turned into postcards and other advocacy tools used to share their stories with D.C. policymakers. Youth also prepared testimonies about their experiences and the need for more funding to support programs addressing youth homelessness, and they testified during a hearing before the Department of Human Services and the Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Thanks in part to the students’ testimony and advocacy, Councilmember Marion Barry publicly committed to set aside up to $4 million for homeless youth services and supports. DCAYA members and staff convened a meeting with staff from the offices of Councilmember Tommy Wells and Mayor Adrian Fenty to discuss long-term planning to end youth homelessness in the District. Department of Human Services Director Clarence Carter said youth had not previously been part of this conversation.

Garbage Outside

Editor's Note: During the winter of 2005-2006, students from several organizations across the District of Columbia documented the conditions of their school facilities as well as positive aspects of their education. Students then shared their photographs with DC City Councilmembers as they debated over the School Modernization Financing Act. The legislation, which was approved in March 2006, promises $200 million per year in funding for DC public school facilities, increasing every year to adjust for inflation. Two of the students and selected photographs were featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Anderson Cooper 360.

These pictures show gross and unhealthy lunches that get kids sick and unable to participate in class, writes William, an eighth grader. This is important to me because I want to be energized and be able to do my work without my stomach growling.
